Prepare the Onion
- Peel the onion and cut it in half from top to bottom. Slice each half into thick wedges, then gently separate the layers to form petal-shaped pieces.
Prepare the Breading Station
- Set up three bowls:
- Bowl 1: Mix flour, salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- Bowl 2: Whisk eggs with milk or buttermilk.
- Bowl 3: Add panko breadcrumbs.
Coat the Onion Petals
- Dip each onion petal into the flour mixture, then into the egg mixture, and finally coat it in breadcrumbs until evenly covered.
Preheat the Air Fryer
- Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 3 minutes.
Air Fry the Onion Petals
- Arrange the breaded onion petals in a single layer inside the air fryer basket. Lightly spray them with cooking spray.
- Cook for 8–10 minutes, then flip the petals and cook another 4–5 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
Serve
- Remove from the air fryer and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce such as ranch, spicy mayo, or blooming onion sauce.

Notes
- Panko breadcrumbs create the crispiest coating.
- Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket; cook in batches if necessary.
- Lightly spraying the petals with oil helps achieve a golden, crunchy texture.
- For extra flavor, add parmesan cheese or Cajun seasoning to the breadcrumb mixture.
- Serve immediately for the best crispiness.
