Ingredients

For the Burgers
  • 1 lb Ground beef (80/20 recommended) Divided into 4 equal portions
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Black pepper
  • 4 slices American cheese
For Assembly
  • 1/2 cup Shredded iceberg lettuce
  • 4 slices Tomato
  • 1/4 cup Diced onion Yellow or white
  • 2 tbsp Dill pickle slices Chopped
  • 4 tbsp Burger sauce (ketchup, mustard, mayo mix) Or your preferred sauce

Equipment

  • Large skillet or griddle
  • Spatula
  • Mixing bowl

Method

  1. Season the ground beef portions lightly with salt and pepper. Do not overmix.
  2. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat until hot. Do not add oil, as the fat from the beef is sufficient.
  3. Place two beef balls on the hot surface. Immediately press each ball down firmly with a sturdy spatula until it forms a thin patty. Hold the pressure for about 10 seconds.
  4. Cook the patties for 2 to 3 minutes until the edges are brown and crispy. Scrape underneath the patty to release it from the pan, then flip.
  5. Immediately place one slice of cheese on top of each patty. Cook for another 1 to 2 minutes until the cheese is melted and the beef is cooked through.
  6. Remove the cooked patties from the skillet. Repeat the smashing and cooking process with the remaining two portions of beef and cheese.
  7. To assemble the bowls, divide the lettuce between two serving bowls. Top the lettuce with the cooked smashed patties (two per bowl). Place two tomato slices, the diced onion, and the chopped pickles on top of the meat.
  8. Spoon 2 tablespoons of burger sauce over the toppings in each bowl. Serve immediately.

Notes

For a crispier bottom, you can briefly place the cooked patties back on the hot pan for 30 seconds after removing them, just before assembly. Use high-quality beef for the best flavor.
